Every two years we request the General Price Lists (GPLs) from all the funeral homes in western Massachusetts. We analyze these documents and post pricing for immediate burial, direct cremation, basic service fee, embalming, least cost casket, and least cost vault.

How we prepared our report: On January 11, 2024, our Price Comparison study committee met and prepared a letter requesting the General Price List (GPL) from all 84 funeral homes located in western Massachusetts. The letter was sent on January 26, 2024 with a requested deadline of March 1. Our committee then reached out to non-responders by phone, email and/or on-site visits. By early April we succeeded in collecting GPLs for 79 funeral homes, bringing the overall response rate to 94%. This compares well to previous response rates of 81% and 65% in 2022 and 2020 respectively.
Before posting results, the data was rechecked against the supplied GPL for accuracy. On the report page you’ll find links to category definitions, our GPL policy, more about our methods, and a guide to using this new table. The “Get GPL” column provides links to the actual GPLs we collected, enabling you to see price quotes for many additional services beyond the basic ones that we selected.
